2016 ICOM Milan, Italy – Museums and Cultural Landscapes

From 3 to 9 July, 2016, was held in Milan, Italy, the 24th General Conference of ICOM (International Council of Museums), the international organization of museums and museum professionals committed to preserving, ensuring continuity and communicating the value of the present and future, tangible and intangible World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

On the 8th of July 2016 I was called upon as interpreter Italian-English for a group of about 40 journalists and directors of important European and World museums who took a day-trip to “Lunigiana, land of a hundred castles” to discover its cultural, natural and gastronomic heritage. [Lunigiana lies within the provinces of La Spezia (Liguria) and Massa Carrara (Tuscany)]

I personally would like to thank mrs. Raffaella Paoletti (Omnia Vanitas – Amici di Loris Jacopo Bononi Castiglione del Terziere) who opened up the doors of her residence (Castiglione Del Terziere) and her inestimable library containing pricelss local and national ancient codes, manuscripts and books, among which – just to name one – an incunabula of the Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri.

The castle of Castiglione del Terziere is exceptional: in 1451 the independent fief of Castiglione del Terziere passed under the control of Florence and became the seat of the Capitanato di Giustizia (Captaincy of Justice) for the Lunigiana, largely due to its geostrategical position as a natural crossroads between communication routes, paths of trade and pilgrimage routes like the Via Francigena, which in 1994 became an European cultural route by declaration of the Council of Europe. For about three hundred years the mandate of the captains (judges) who took turns in charge of applying the Florentine Laws, lasted only one year in order to avoid corruption issues.

NB: the private library can be visited upon request. The tours inside the residence/library are held by mrs. Raffaella Paoletti in Italian.
Should you like to visit the castle/library and need an interpreter Dutch/English do not hesitate to contact me.
